Antioxidant Levels and Lipid Peroxidation in Patients with Advanced Cervical Cancer

Abstract: It is widely accepted that excess production of free radicals, particularly oxygen radicals, creates a condition known as oxidative stress, which causes cell damage and plays fundamental role in various diseases, aging and neoplastic transformation. This study evaluated antioxidant enzyme and oxidative stress levels in patients with advanced cervical cancer. This hospital-based study included 34 cervical cancer patients, with 34 controls. Plasma anti-oxidant enzymes including: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and products of oxidative stress, Thiobarbituric acid reducing substances (TBARS) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) were analyzed by spectrophptometric kits. Studentsís t-test was performed to compare mean values of the parameters. A statistically significant decrease in plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was observed in cervical cancer patients as compared to the controls. The Thiobarbituric acid reducing substances (TBARS) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were higher in the cases than in the controls. This was also statistically significant. The oxidative stress levels in patients with advanced cervical cancer are significantly higher than that of the controls and this may be attributed to the antioxidant enzymes being overwhelmed, probably by the malignant process. However there is need to further investigate the levels of trace elements like Zinc, Manganese which act as co-factors for these enzymes as this could further explain the low enzyme level.
