UTILIZATION OF CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING SERVICES BY WOMEN OF CHILD-BEARING AGE IN UYO METROPOLIS, AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT: This study sought to determine the level of awareness and utilization of cervical cancer screening and factors militating against effective utilization of cervical cancer screening by women of child bearing age in Uyo metropolis.  A cross sectional descriptive survey design was used for the study and simple random sampling technique was used to get 210 respondents in 3 hospitals in Uyo metropolis rendering cervical cancer screening services.  Data were collected using a pretested interviewer administered, semi structured questionnaire and was analyzed using descriptive statistics, while Pearson product moment correlation analysis was used to test the relationship between variables.  The results showed that majority of the respondents when amounted to 65%, were aware of the services, while 35% were not aware.  There was a significant relationship between awareness and utilization of cervical cancer screening when the cal r-value of 0.36 was greater than the critical r-value of 0.167 with 208 degree of freedom.  Factors identified as obstacles to utilization of the services were, lack of government policy, lack of information and health education, unfriendly attitude of health provides, fear of unknown causing social stigma and high cost of the services.  Based on the above, it was recommended that cervical screening policy should be established and sustained by government.  Free cervical cancer screening for women of child bearing age and timely vaccination against human papilloma virus infection for girl child.
